Acupuncture is an effective way to relieve symptoms and signs of many health problems, and Maria Hogan, L.Ac. (licensed acupuncturist), MS, LMT is bringing this ancient Chinese healing art to Incentives.
Over the course of millennia, acupuncture has developed into a healing system, the goal of which is to activate the natural, self-healing abilities of the body, strengthening and supporting the body to prevent illness and disease in the future.
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine, sterile, one-time use needles into specific body points. The points occur on meridians, which flow like rivers in the body and carry Qi, which brings nourishment and sustenance to these points. Qi is a combination of energies generated by the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the constitution we inherit from our parents. It is the vital energy in all living things.
The benefits of acupuncture are many: it can be used to treat a broad spectrum of conditions ranging from emotional disorders (anxiety, depression) to digestive complaints (nausea, vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome); pain syndromes due to an injury or associated with chronic degenerative diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis; neurological problems like migraines or Parkinson’s disease; and as a rehabilitation strategy for individuals who have suffered a stroke. Acupuncture has relieved respiratory conditions (including sinusitis and asthma) and many gynecologic disorders and infertility. It has also proved beneficial for reducing fatigue and addictions and for promoting overall well-being.
Studies have indicated that acupuncture can help relieve chronic low back pain, dental pain, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and symptoms of osteoarthritis. It has been shown to assist in the treatment of emotional pain syndromes such as post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as controlling chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. It has also demonstrated clinical success in achieving pregnancy when used in conjunction with in-vitro fertilization.
Other conditions acupuncture can treat include alcohol dependency, Bell’s Palsy, bursitis, chemotherapy/radiation side effects, chronic fatigue, colitis, diabetes, drug dependency, earache, fibroids, gastritis, headaches, insomnia, muscle spasms, neuralgia, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), sciatica, sexual dysfunction, smoking cessation, sore throat, sprains, stiff neck, stress, stroke, and tendonitis.
