The Answer to “How Much Should I Tip?” and Other Pressing Spa and Salon Questions

At Incentives Organic Spa and Salon our goal is to make our clients feel pampered, relaxed and beautiful! Oftentimes during check-in or at check-out, a customer will lean over the reception desk and whisper, “Can I ask you a question?” Incentives Etiquette Guide helps you prepare and make the most of your visit by addressing your concerns about attire, tipping and more, so that you can begin and end your services with confidence.

1. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY STYLIST AND/OR TECHNICIAN?
One of the biggest questions people often ask about going to a spa and salon is, how much should you tip? Tipping is a custom that allows you to express your appreciation for a job well done. As a general rule of thumb, tips should be between 15 and 20 percent. If you are extremely happy with your service, you can show your gratitude by offering more.

2. SHOULD I TIP THE STYLIST ASSISTANT?
In a busy salon, Stylists usually have assistants that help them sweep hair from the floor, wash and dry a client’s hair, as well as apply treatments during a color process. If their assistant helped with your hair in any way, you may want to consider tipping them. A large tip is not necessary if they simply washed your hair, in fact, just a few dollars would suffice. But if they are washing your hair, applying color, brushing it, drying it, etc., we recommend you tip between $5 and $10.

3. SHOULD I TELL MY STYLIST AND/OR TECHNICIAN IF I’M NOT HAPPY WITH MY SERVICE?
Yes. Communication is the key to building a happy, healthy and satisfying relationship with your stylist and technician. If you don’t, they will never know that you were dissatisfied with your service and thus, will not be able to fix what went wrong. Explain what, how and why you did not get the results you were looking for and they will be more than willing to correct it. If you are uncomfortable telling them yourself, you can always ask to speak with the spa manager.

4. IS IT OKAY TO CANCEL MY APPOINTMENT?
Spa policy requires you to give at least 24 hours notice if you must cancel an appointment but… life happens. We all understand that accidents, emergencies and anomalies are unpredictable. If you absolutely have an emergency that cannot wait, simply explain the situation to the receptionist and we will accommodate you accordingly.

5. IS IT OKAY TO EXPLAIN IN DETAIL WHAT I WANT?
Of course it’s okay to discuss the specifics of your visit. In fact, stylists and technicians need to know what you want in as much detail as possible so that they can make you happy with the end result. Bringing in a picture, an article or writing down your thoughts is highly recommended.

6. CAN YOU BE SILENT DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT?
Your visit to the spa and salon is YOUR TIME. We encourage you to relax and get comfortable in your surroundings. Silence is a good sign that you are ready to sit back and enjoy your visit!

7. CAN I BRING MY KIDS TO MY APPOINTMENT?
The Spa is a designated “quiet area”. Many guests come in to enjoy the serenity and solitude, therefore children should generally not be in the spa area. If you have children and are stuck for a sitter, the good news is the spa and salon offers FREE BABYSITTING through the Fitness Incentive Babysitting services. The babysitting room is filled with fun toys and activities and is managed by several qualified individuals.

8. HOW MUCH INFORMATION SHOULD I SHARE ABOUT MYSELF?
Before you engage in a service it’s important to make your stylist/technician aware of any health concerns or limitations such as pregnancy, allergies, high blood pressure, etc. This knowledge will help the tech assess and adjust your service to better meet your individual needs, avoid any potential side effects and ensure a pleasant experience.

9. WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE GETTING A MASSAGE?
Incentives Spa and Salon strives to achieve the maximum comfort level and although most massage services are enjoyed without clothing, we understand it may be uncomfortable for some people and encourage you to dress at your own discretion. During massage your body will be draped in linens, towels, and/or sheets with only one area of your body exposed at a time. Let your massage therapist know if the temperature in your room is too warm or chilly, the music too loud or soft, or the pressure from your massage too light or strong. Give yourself enough time to arrive on time and relaxed. If you are rushing and arrive stressed, it will take longer to get into a relaxed state.
